POST-TREATMENT RECOVERY

Arm recovery after breast cancer surgery

If arm elevation, shoulder movement or upper-limb comfort is affected after breast cancer surgery, repeated stretching on your own is not always the right answer. Surgery type, wound healing, pain, swelling risk and treatment stage should be considered first.

QUICK ANSWER

Three points to understand first

01

Clarify why movement is limited

Pain, tissue tightness, protective posture, inactivity and swelling can all contribute and may require different approaches.

02

Take heaviness or swelling seriously

Heaviness does not automatically mean lymphedema, but persistent or asymmetric symptoms deserve assessment.

03

Coordinate recovery with ongoing treatment

Radiotherapy, medication and wound healing can influence the timing and intensity of rehabilitation.

PATIENT QUESTIONS

Common questions

Is it normal that I cannot raise my arm after breast surgery?

Some early limitation can occur, but persistent restriction, increasing pain or interference with daily life should be assessed.

Does arm heaviness always mean lymphedema?

No. Clinical assessment is needed because several conditions can cause similar symptoms.

Is earlier stretching always better?

No. Timing and intensity depend on wound healing, surgery type, pain and swelling risk.
